This one day recently, good and warm, a friend dropped over to pick up some artwork. She is in the process of settling into a new home. Upon storing the work into her SUV hatchback I noticed she had her Halloween mannequin laying in there. “What are you going to do with that?” I ask. “I need to store it somewhere.” says Vee. “Hmm, well you can store it here,” says I. It would be fun to have it around. I already have a vintage seamstress dress form with no head so this would be a cool addition even if for a short time. My friend holds back the junk in the trunk so I can access the doll’s legs, which are spread and fixed..as I pull her our, fishnet stockings and all, I realise I am standing between her legs. I see her leopard print lingerie dress is slowly rising up above her small pert breasts. This is starting to look a little pornographic, I think to myself…I start to laugh and my friend starts to laugh and then we are both laughing hysterically as I grab the doll between her legs to lift her out and hold her behind her back. Did I say she had no arms? I also am aware that all the banging of construction work across the street has ceased and I am sure the crew at the Central fire station and the 911 call center are all having a right old giggle at us. I aim her head first into my house but as I get to the door, a passing middle aged man looks over and shouts out “a blow up doll would be much easier”….

Nancy decided to set up shop on the side of my fridge where the door opened. She’s a tiny spider with a tiny web. I had to put a sticky note next to her “don’t disturb Nancy” as it was easy to miss her.

She sat in that web for a week and didn’t move. I wondered if she was just a dead shell of her former self. I happened to be out in my yard one sunny Fall day and turning over a piece of wood found a small white winged fly. I took it in to the house and gently deposited it on Nancy’s web..With a speed faster than lightening she left her center and had that baby wrapped up nicely and stored for later use.

I felt quite good to know she would be okay for a few days. The days got colder. I found a carpenter. I had trouble with that one as I like carpenters, they were my floor friends when I was a child in my Great grandmother’s kitchen. I tried to get it on the web but he was heavy, she was small and the web broke up. So he was spared his life and put back out doors. Mom had to point out to me that she wouldn’t have gone after something that wouldn’t fly in to her web..duh!! Never occurred to me.

Nancy disappeared web and all for a couple of days. Then returned with new vigor and rebuilt her web, sitting at center patiently. Two days later I started getting concerned again. I can’t feed Nancy!! I don’t like the weight of the responsibility either. I can’t bear it..POOR NANCE!

I decided the best thing to do would be to put her in the greenhouse where she would find somewhere to hunker down for the winter or at least have a chance at food.

Maybe we will run into each other again some day..
